THE IDEA

ECOC is an acronym for European Capital of Culture. The European Capital of Culture is a title of a city assigned by the European Union for a period of one year. The ECOC event has always been a highly popular annual feature since it was launched in Athens 1985 and Pécs was selected to be the ECOC in 2010.

The idea to establish the of European Capitals of Culture Youth Wind Orchestra© (further on ECOC-YWO) was proposed by Imre Bogyó, festival director and initiator of the Wind Music Grand Prix of Hungary, with a view to creating an Orchestra which would represent the European ideal of a community working together to achieve peace and social understanding.

The advisory board Pro Wind Music Foundation undertook the responsibility to bring the project (training) orchestra into existence every year, as an organic musical part of Wind Music Grand Prix of Hungary.

THE ORCHESTRA

The Orchestra comprises up to 65 players, representing all European cities awarded for ECOC (past, present, or future). The players will be selected each year from candidates aged between 14 and 30 and the best young musicians In 2010 the Orchestra performs exclusively original high level works for symphonic band created by Hungarian composers. The slogan of the program “Pécs welcomes Europe, Europe welcomes Pécs” reflects the European idea of community.

The members of the first session ECOC-YWO will meet between 3-11 July 2010, for a rehearsal period of six days, to be followed by a concert given on 10 July as part of the final ceremony Wind Music Grand Prix of Hungary.

THE CONDUCTOR

The Orchestra will be conducted by the internationally acknowledged conductor László Marosi. Marosi is a Professor of Music at the University of Central Florida. As a guest conductor, lecturer and adjudicator he has performed throughout Europe, Israel, England, South Africa, Argentina, Brazil, Japan, and the United States of America.

APPLICATION for the session 2010 – requirements are as follows:

Qualified young musicians (professional or music students) playing a wind instrument, percussion or string bass.

Aged between 14 – 30

Living in one of the European cities.  Not exclusively but preferred are habitants of  ECOC selected cities (past, present or future).

REGISTRATION FEE

The selected candidates are required to pay a registration fee amounting to 100 EURO per person, which includes the costs for food and accommodation for 8 days, free entries to all concerts, contests, music fair and open workshops of Wind Music Grand Prix of Hungary.

The following expenses are in charge of the applicant:

the fees of bank(wire) transfer

all respective expenses

travel costs to and from Pécs (Hungary)

The idea to establish the Youth Wind Orchestra of Euroepean Capitals of Culture © (further on YWO-ECOC) was bornproposed by Imre Bogyó, festival director and also initiator of the Wind Music Grand Prix of Hungary, with a view to creating an Orchestra which would represent the European ideal of a community working together to achieve peace and social understanding.

The Orchestra

The Orchestra is made up of comprises up to 60 -65 players, representing all European cities awarded for ECOC (past, present, or future). The players will be selected each year from candidates aged between 14 and 27 and the best young musicians will be invited.

In 2010 the Orchestra performs exclusively original high level works for symphonic band created by Hungarian composers. The sloganmotto of the program “Hungary welcomes Europe, Europe welcomes Hungary” will reflects the European idea of community working mentioned above.

The first session of the ”YWO-ECOC” will take place in Pécs (Hungary)

4th-10th.
